NYPD cop suspended for attacking precinct colleague
An NYPD cop who’s also a union delegate was suspended for attacking another officer at their East Harlem stationhouse, the Daily News has learned.
Police Officer Gloria Byrd was caught on surveillance camera, in uniform, tackling the younger female cop by the parking lot of the 25th Precinct stationhouse on E. 119th St. near Park Ave. on Wednesday night, sources said.
The fight began when Byrd — a 20-year NYPD veteran and Police Benevolent Association delegate — flashed her squad car’s lights at the younger cop, who responded by flipping her the bird, sources said.
The younger officer then walked off and Byrd followed her into the parking lot.
Surveillance video reviewed by the Daily News shows Byrd (shown right with PBA President Pat Lynch) chasing after the younger cop and throwing her against a wall.
Byrd pulls the other cop to the ground and fights with her before other officers drag the two away from each other, the video shows.
Later, inside the stationhouse, Byrd again lunged at the younger woman, sources said.
The entire altercation was caught on the younger cop’s body camera. The two women have been arguing with each other for some time, sources said.
An NYPD spokeswoman confirmed Saturday that Byrd was suspended without pay. No criminal charges have been filed.
“The incident is under internal review,” the spokeswoman said.
The PBA did not immediately return a request for comment.
