Murphy gets 6 GLAAD media awards noms
Nominees for the 32nd annual GLAAD Media Awards are out — and proud.
GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, announced Thursday 198 nominees across 28 categories for its awards honoring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of LGBTQ people and issues.
Many of this years’ nominees in the film category tell stories of queer women, including Hulu’s romantic comedy “Happiest Season,” directed by Clea DuVall and starring Kristen Stewart; Netflix’s award-buzzing “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom;” Ryan Murphy’s lesbian musical extravaganza “The Prom,” also on Netflix; and “Ammonite,” a much-hyped drama about the forbidden passion between two 19th-century women played by Oscar-winner Kate Winslet and four-time Academy Award-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan.
In the television and streaming category, Netflix overwhelmingly leads the pack with a total of 26 nominations, followed by HBO Max with nine.
Overall, streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon received nearly twice as many nominations as cable (58 and 29 respectively) and more than four times what broadcast networks received (14).
Über LGBTQ producer Ryan Murphy was nominated six times, as a director, producer or executive producer for “The Prom,” “The Boys in the Band,” “Circus of Books, Hollywood,” “Ratched” and “9-1-1: Lone Star.”
Women were also well represented in the music categories: transgender singer and actress Peppermint, bisexual artists Lady Gaga and Halsey, as well as pansexual artists Kehlani and Miley Cyrus were all nominated for outstanding music artist.
Two new categories were introduced this year: an award for outstanding children’s programming and one for outstanding breakthrough music artist.
