Brooklyn stars go for Cornegy

- Shant Shahrigian

City Councilman Robert Cornegy is getting a major dose of Brooklyn cred for his next campaign, thanks to endorsements from Spike Lee and Tracy Morgan.

The stars plan to voice their support of Cornegy when he announces his Brooklyn borough president run this Thursday. The trio knew each from Brooklyn in the 1980s, Cornegy said Monday, and the endorsement comes as the entertainment giants have been getting more involved in local causes.

Lee (top photo) got to know about Cornegy when the pol was on St. John’s University’s Final Four basketball team in 1984-85, Cornegy said, adding that he met Lee’s sister, Joie Lee, before meeting the director.

In 2015, Cornegy got a stretch of Stuyvesant Ave. named “Do the Right Thing Way” in honor of one of the native Brooklyn director’s greatest films.

The councilman said he used to play basketball at the Tompkins Houses, where Morgan (bottom photo) grew up, and got to know the actor at local clubs around the time Morgan’s comedy career was launching.
