WHO SHOULD GET THE GOLDEN GLOBES?

Golden Globes 2021 predictions: Who will win vs. who should win as Hollywood awards season kicks off

- BY KATE FELDMAN AND PETER SBLENDORIO

In a year we all spent cooped up at home, movies and TV provided a much-needed escape. “One Night in Miami” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” took us through different parts of the civil rights movement while “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” gave us one last look at Chadwick Boseman.

“The Crown” explored Buckingham Palace and “The Mandalorian” visited a galaxy far, far away.

The best shows and movies each provided something different, something new, something you couldn’t get anywhere else, earning them nominations for Sunday’s Golden Globe awards.

Here are the best bets on how Sunday’s awards show will go:

DRAMA

What will win: “Mank”

The black-and-white movie seems poised to win the gold Sunday considering it was nominated in every major category, and led all films with six nods. An exploration of old Hollywood and “Citizen Kane” writer Herman Mankiewicz, “Mank” boasts the performances and thorough filmmaking that typically play well at the Globes.

What should win: “The Father”

Buoyed by standout performances from Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, “The Father” takes viewers inside the mind of an elderly man with dementia and gives a glimpse of life through his eyes.

ACTOR IN A DRAMA

Who will win: Chadwick Boseman, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”

Most people suspect this race comes down to Hopkins vs. Boseman, who dazzled as a headstrong trumpeter in “Ma Rainey.” Boseman, who died four months before the movie’s release, has already won numerous awards for his performance, and that’s likely to continue Sunday.

Who should win: Chadwick Boseman, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”

The final performance of Boseman’s career was one of his very best.

ACTRESS IN A DRAMA

Who will win: Frances McDormand, “Nomadland”

In the Globes’ most-loaded field, voters will likely give the nod to McDormand, whose subtle-yet-powerful performance as a van-dweller in “Nomadland” has been buzzed about for months.

Who should win: Carey Mulligan, “Promising Young Woman”

Mulligan’s grounded portrayal of a woman seeking to teach predatory men a lesson in “Promising Young Woman” is the type of performance you don’t want to miss a second of — and can’t stop thinking about afterward

COMEDY OR MUSICAL

Who will win: “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”

The long-awaited “Borat” sequel was “very nice” in the eyes of Globes voters, as the comedy is well-represented across the board in nominations. The movie made many headlines in 2020, with Sacha Baron Cohen not missing a beat as a Kazakhstani journalist interacting with unsuspecting, oblivious Americans. Who should win: “Hamilton” The filmed version of the Broadway blockbuster completely lives up to the hype and makes viewers feel like they really were in the room where it happened.

ACTOR IN A COMEDY OR MUSICAL

Who will win: Sacha Baron Cohen, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”

Cohen was a big hit last year as he’s also nominated for best supporting actor for “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” He’s more likely to win here for one of the most memorable performances of the past year.

Who should win: Lin-Manuel Miranda, “Hamilton”

In addition to being the lyricist and musician who created and wrote “Hamilton,” Miranda truly makes you believe he is Alexander Hamilton for 2½ hours.

ACTRESS IN A COMEDY OR MUSICAL

Who will win: Maria

Bakalova, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”

The Bulgarian-born Bakalova skyrocketed from a virtual unknown to a major Hollywood movie star practically overnight with her compelling portrayal of Borat’s daughter.

Who should win: Maria

Bakalova, “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”

A true testament to Bakalova’s

performance is that she manages to stand out in a movie that centers on such a larger-thanlife figure in Borat.

DRAMA SERIES

Who will win: “The Crown” In a year that saw Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle pull back from their royal duties, “The Crown” was somehow more out there. Who should win: “Lovecraft Country” “Lovecraft Country” was creative, clever and inventive even when it didn’t work. Showrunner Misha Green pulled off ambitious supernatural storytelling and stars Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors made it believable.

ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Who will win: Jason Bateman, “Ozark” Josh O’Connor’s nod for “The Crown” raised some eyebrows, and the five other actors nominated could easily find themselves accepting over Zoom on Sunday. But Bateman keeps bringing a little something extra to the Ozarks drug game. Who should win: Matthew Rhys, “Perry Mason” Rhys is no Raymond Burr, but holding together this chaotic reboot is impressive enough. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association continuously snubbed Rhys during his “Americans” tenure, so it’s time to right that wrong.

ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Who will win: Emma Corrin, “The Crown” In a loaded category, Emma Corrin’s Princess Diana is a take on the “People’s Princess” that truly tugs at the heartstrings. Who should win: Emma Corrin, “The Crown” Few of the “Crown” characters deserve sympathy, but Corrin plays Diana with such naiveté and desperation that you just want to give her a hug, or at least tell her to run for the hills. Knowing how her love story ends doesn’t make it any easier to watch.

COMEDY OR MUSICAL SERIES

Who will win: “Schitt’s Creek” No other comedy show might as well exist in the eyes of awards show voters for the past year, but there’s also no better show to be awarded than “Schitt’s Creek.” The Levy family will go out on top once again. Who should win: “Schitt’s Creek” This category includes some of the best series of the year, but nothing came close to “Schitt’s Creek,” which not only avoided the curse of the final season but created one of the sweetest, funniest, most heartbreaking finales in recent memory.

ACTOR IN A COMEDY OR MUSICAL SERIES

Who will win: Eugene Levy, “Schitt’s Creek” How do you vote against Eugene Levy? Who should win: Jason Sudeikis, “Ted Lasso” There were years where “Schitt’s Creek” getting award show recognition, or any at all, would have been a miracle, but boy did the tides change. Now it’s time to pass the buck (trophy?) and there’s no better successor than Sudeikis, whose eponymous coach’s humor and heart makes soccer watchable.

ACTRESS IN A COMEDY OR MUSICAL SERIES

Who will win: Catherine O’Hara, “Schitt’s Creek” How do you vote against Catherine O’Hara? Who should win: Kaley Cuoco, “The Flight Attendant” Escaping a role can be tough on some actors but Kaley Cuoco flew far away from “Big Bang Theory” as a flight attendant caught up in a tangled web of murder and mayhem. Cuoco proved that she could soar above her sitcom roots with the chaos and confidence that few could pull off.

TV MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES

Who will win: “The Queen’s Gambit” “The Queen’s Gambit” moved all its pieces masterfully, brilliantly combining hope and despair, loneliness and friendship. Who should win: “The Queen’s Gambit” It’s not just that “The Queen’s Gambit” made people care about chess, but it was the beauty and care with which “The Queen’s Gambit” made it happen.
