B’klyn nurse found dead in hit & run

- BY THOMAS TRACEY

A 61-year-old Brooklyn woman described by family as a hardworking nurse and health aide died in a car crash that police are investigating as a hit-and-run, authorities said Saturday.

Estelle Davis was near a subway stop at the corner of New Lots and Van Sinderen Aves. in New Lots when she was discovered around 2:20 p.m. Friday, cops said.

EMS rushed her to Brookdale University Hospital, but she could not be saved.

Davis’ family said she worked seven days a week, as a nurse in Brooklyn and at a home care facility in Jamaica, Queens. She died on her way to the Brooklyn job, where she was due to work a 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. shift, relatives said.

“Estelle — she has a heart of gold, always willing to help people,” said her grieving husband, Cleveland Thomas.

“She was a pastor, she owns the title of schoolteacher and a nurse, so she’s extremely people oriented. And she’s always willing to help others who are in need,” said Thomas, 59.

“She would save the whole world if she could,” he added. “She’s dedicated, she’s dedicated to people.”

Doctors at Brookdale called Thomas just after 3 p.m. on Friday and told him to head for the hospital immediately.

Thomas — who met his wife 48 years ago — said that after the call he felt “disoriented” and “filled with anxiety.”

He walked to the hospital, and unknowingly he passed the crash scene, 16 blocks from their home.

“I walked to keep my composure,” he said. “I walked all the way to the hospital — that’s me. She and I are energetic like that.”

“When I went to the hospital and saw her body, I just kissed her and kissed her and kissed her and cried,” he said.

Police said Davis (photo) suffered “trauma to her body,” and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of her death. The case was still under investigation late Saturday.
