‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ wins box office for second weekend
“Raya and the Last Dragon” remained atop the box office during its second weekend in theaters.
The animated Disney film about a young warrior princess made $5.5 million domestically between March 12-14, according to Entertainment Weekly.
The movie, which features a voice cast led by Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina, made $8.5 million domestically during its opening weekend earlier this month, which also led the box office at the time.
“Raya and the Last Dragon” follows the title character, voiced by Tran, as she attempts to find a legendary dragon to help restore peace in the fractured kingdom of Kumandra, which was inspired by real-life Southeast Asian cultures.
Disney released the movie simultaneously March 5 in theaters and on the Disney+ streaming service under the premier access tag for $29.99. The film has earned rave reviews, with a 94% approval rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
Finishing second at the box office from March 12-14 was “Tom & Jerry,” which made $4 million domestically in what was the family friendly film’s third weekend in theaters.
“Tom & Jerry” features the classic cartoon cat and mouse characters in a live-action setting, with Chloe Grace Moretz and Ken Jeong among the members of the star-studded cast.
The movie made nearly $14 million in its opening weekend after arriving in theaters on Feb. 26, giving it the biggest debut of any film in 2021.
Warner Bros. Pictures also gave “Tom & Jerry” a simultaneous release, as it came out on the HBO Max streaming service the same day it hit theaters.
Cinemas reopened in New York City on March 5, more than 11 months after the COVID-19 pandemic caused movie theaters to shutter indefinitely.
New Hyde Park, L.I.: Why is it considered racist that a British royal would want Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby to be all white? I am Jewish and I would only want my child to be born of Jewish parents. Does that make me a racist? Not at all. Jewish people having Jewish children is a millennia-long tradition that has kept the Jewish religion alive and meaningful for us. Unfortunately, we live in a highly critical and judgmental world today where if you don’t meet the politically correct standards of the progressive police, you are quickly ostracized. These so-called progressives are brainwashed, narrow-minded and misguided people who are damaging society like never before by fomenting hatred and culture wars and confusing young people to the point that they are ruining their lives. Good always emerges in our world but it will take a long time before the damage inflicted by the politically correct can be repaired.
