Posthumous nod for Chadwick Boseman

- Kate Feldman

The late Chadwick Boseman was nominated for a best actor Oscar on Monday for his leading role in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” — his final performance before dying of cancer in late summer.

Boseman (inset) got the nod for playing the part of Levee Green, the trumpeter in blues singer Ma Rainey’s band who dreams of making it on his own.

He’ll go up against Riz Ahmed for “Sound of Metal,” Anthony Hopkins for “The Father,” Gary Oldman for “Mank” and Steven Yeun for “Minari.”

Last month, Boseman won a Golden Globe for best actor in a drama motion picture for “Ma Rainey,” which features Viola Davis as the titular main character.

“He would thank God,” his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, said through tears while accepting the Golden Globe on his behalf.

“He would thank his parents. He would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices. He would say something beautiful, something inspiring, something that would amplify that little voice inside of all of us that tells you, ‘You can,’ that tells you to keep going, that calls you back to what you are meant to be doing at this moment in history.”

Boseman is now the seventh actor to receive a posthumous Oscar nomination, following James Dean (“East of Eden,” 1955 and “Giant,” 1956), Spencer Tracy (“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” 1967); Peter Finch (“Network,” 1976), Ralph Richardson (“Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes,” 1984); Massimo Troisi (“The Postman (Il Postino),” 1995), and Heath Ledger (“The Dark Knight,” 2008).

Only Finch won.
