Anti-Andy banner to fly over Albany

- Tim Balk

Gov. Cuomo’s hold on power appears to be up in the air.

For two hours on Wednesday, a plane will fly a banner declaring “New Yorkers Say: Cuomo’s Got to Go!” over the state Capitol, a trio of gender equity groups said.

The planned flyover in the Albany skies takes aim at the scandal-plagued governor after a series of women accused him of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct, and as his office reels from accusations that he fostered a toxic work environment.

“Sexual harassment should not be tolerated in any workplace, let alone by the administration of the governor of New York,” Shaunna Thomas, executive director of UltraViolet, said in a statement. “These women are putting everything on the line in the hopes that their abuser will be held accountable. We believe them.”

UltraViolet joined Women’s March, a national organization, and the Brooklyn-based Girls for Gender Equity in the roughly weeklong planning of the flight. The groups said the flyover will take place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Cuomo, 63, has watched his political support shrink amid the drumbeat of allegations, and U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) have both called on their fellow Democrat to resign.

Still, a Siena College poll released Monday signaled that many New Yorkers are not ready to give the governor the boot: 50% of voters said the embattled leader should not immediately resign.
