Brooklyn: My family and I have been longtime fans of The News, but I was disappointed in the article about a man who was convicted of the attempted murder of an Asian man but was not charged with a hate crime (“We did everything we could,” March 2). The News found it necessary to report that this man was not committing a hate crime, which, as an Asian New Yorker, I find incredibly invalidating to the Asian community. The threshold for hate crime classification is too high, and the offender’s own wife admitted that it could have been a hate crime. The article could have instead focused on mental health issues or problems with the legal system, but instead was used to belittle Asian-Americans’ experiences with racism.

I was also disappointed to open the paper Wednesday morning and only see a small story about the anti-Asian hate crime and mass shooting that occurred in Atlanta. Again, as a longtime customer of The News, I would hope for better. Anti-Asian hate crimes are a real and prominent threat, and news outlets are responsible for sharing this in order to spread awareness.

My 15-year-old brother fears the subway because he’s afraid that he’ll be attacked because of his race. I’m not sure if my family will continue to subscribe to the Daily News, because it doesn’t seem like The News cares much about the Asian community. I hope in the future, The News can do better. Ozone Park: There’s only one word as to why there are all these attacks on Asian people: Trump.

Mike Colasanti

Leaders beholden

Cincinnati: Smithies at the Democratic forge are hammering out policies that benefit their donors like the teachers unions and the plaintiffs bar, and if those plans happen to redound to the credit of the American people as a whole, well, that is simply a bit of salubrious happenstance. Since Big Labor is one of the principal grinders of the big blue political organ, liberal smithies dance to the union tune and forge policies that protect union teachers irrespective of the ongoing harm to public school students quarantined at home and, as important, regardless of the science indicating that public schools can open safely. Although the president is said to be the most powerful individual in the world, Joe Biden cannot confront his paymasters and we Americans are poorer for it.

Checks welcome

East Meadow, L.I.: To Voicer Gladys Zenon: As far as returning the stimulus money we are about to receive, you are right — I don’t think so. That money will help pay for the rise in gasoline and taxes that we are now experiencing due to all the freebies given to immigrants and illegals for housing, food, phones, college — I could go on and on. So my husband and I will gladly keep the money that will be coming to us to help defer the costs of everything that is rising thanks to good old Mr. Biden.

Did you?

Margret Stine

Staten Island: To Voicer Gladys Zenon: Did you return your “Trump” stimulus money? Just as I thought, you did not. Why not return it now and show the rest of the Trump-bashers how sincere you are? The check is in the mail.

Michael Modafferi

Give what you get

Brooklyn: To Voicer Gladys Zenon: I happen to be one of the lucky ones who do not need the stimulus money. What I did do is to give my money to animal shelters and food pantries. Yes, there are people that need it but the other side of the coin is that people who do not need the money could probably donate to a charity. Stay safe.

Brooklyn: Reading your editorial “The missed lessons of COVID” (March 17) made me want to puke. Discussing which state did the right thing, which state did the wrong thing. Which group was more successful in fighting COVID, which group was less successful. This is not the world’s first pandemic. We know how to fight it, just as we knew how to defeat past pandemics and epidemics like smallpox, polio, measles, rubella, pneumonia, tetanus, shingles, whooping cough, rabies, etc. It’s by vaccinating. We now have terrific vaccines that can defeat

COVID. Let’s get everyone vaccinated. We are all individuals, not states or groups or tribes. Make the individual choice to get vaccinated and you won’t get sick and possibly die from COVID. I’ve been vaccinated, and to quote Kyle Reese in the first “Terminator” movie: “Come with me if you want to live.”

Lie-shy?

Howard Beach: Voicer John Esposito wrote that he can’t maintain eye contact with Biden because the thought of Kool-Aid keeps entering his mind. Does that mean that Esposito believed the more than 30,000 lies and misleading information spewed by Trump over his four years in office? Probably so. Barbara Berg

Manhattan: Referencing Voicer Susan Marie Davniero’s letter re: spring: that was simply lovely! Thank you! Ameen Keshavjee

English error

Maspeth: As a former English teacher now retired, I’ll say that William Shakespeare is rolling in his grave. “The 2021 season will president a new version...” begins the fourth paragraph from your article about the return of Shakespeare in the Park (“Bard will be back in park this summer,” March 17). “President” is a noun and should not be used as a verb. What is it with the proofreading? Wouldn’t spell check have caught that mistake? Come on!

Double trouble

White Plains, N.Y.: Every morning, my husband and I read the Daily News and take turns doing the crossword puzzles. On Tuesday, when you inadvertently published Crossword II twice, we each did the puzzle and compared answers. Not only did we both complete the puzzle, but we each also spelled the same word wrong — Yahtzee. Your error, our pleasure.

Sticking by him

East Meadow, L.I.: To Voicer Dorothy Lyons: No, you are not the only one who supports Gov. Cuomo. When the terrible news came about COVID-19, he was the calming voice when all the others sat on their rear ends and did nothing. The poor excuse for a mayor can’t say enough about how awful these charges are and he can’t wait for the governor to step down. The lack of loyalty among the other Democrats is appalling. The investigation hasn’t even begun. Trump actually had sex with women who are complaining about him and he still has not been punished in any way. The people should vote on this, not the biased politicians.

Rosalind Wolf

Staunch support

Mineola, L.I.: To Voicer Dorothy Lyons: I am with you. I also like Gov. Cuomo and want him to stay on. Still can’t understand why these ladies are coming out now. Do not resign, Gov. Cuomo. We are with you. Maria Perez

Wrong focus

GETTY IMAGES

Maspeth: I agree with Voicer Maggie McCarty: Daily shootings in the streets, homeless and mentally ill in the subways and de Blasio’s going after Andrew Cuomo, his only agenda. What happened to the $1 billion he gave his wife’s ThriveNYC program to help the homeless and mentally ill? Daily News, please investigate. Yes, he probably wants to run for governor but he and his wife should be run out of town.

Merited a response

Westfield, N.J.: Thank you, Voicer Michael Hooker: I also thought “shame on you,” Daily News, for printing Voicer Brad Morris’ unacceptable comments about Christine Blasey Ford’s looks at age 15 as proof of Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s denial of Ford’s sexual assault claims. I also agreed with your “shame on Brad Morris” for writing it in the first place. Regrettably, I did not take the time to write to the Voice of the People to express my thoughts and I am very grateful that you did.
