Film giraffe’s neck is in a Calif. vise

A giraffe who famously appeared in “The Hangover Part III” is now part of an off-screen drama.

Stanley the giraffe was recently “seized in place” by California animal officials because the owners of Malibu Wine Safaris — where the animal has been since 2015 — allegedly don’t have the necessary permits, Los Angeles news station KABC reported.

“Right now, they’re in unlawful possession of a giraffe,” California Department of Fish and Wildlife official Capt. Patrick Foy told the outlet.

The sprawling attraction is home to a number of animal species, including camels and zebras.

However, the family behind the Malibu Wine Safaris doesn’t have the license needed to run an attraction featuring wild animals, according to KABC.

Stanley has not physically been removed from the location for logistical reasons but was “seized” as evidence, the news outlet noted.

Ron Semler, who owns the giraffe, has pleaded not guilty to providing false information when he applied for “restricted species” permit, the news station reported. His son Dakota Semler, who owns the safaris, pleaded not guilty to “maintaining an animal facility or a wild animal without a license.” Both charges are misdemeanors. “The fact of the matter is we rely on the honesty of the permittee, the applicant, to tell us the truth,” Foy told KABC.

Stanley is a fan favorite at the venue, and is known for posing for pictures with customers.

Ron Semler received a letter last June ordering him to move the giraffe elsewhere or humanely destroy the animal. He is currently appealing the permit issue.

“The Hangover Part III,” a comedy crime film released in 2013, stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis.
