Uncle Steve’s Twitter game in midseason form

- BY DEESHA THOSAR

Spring training officially ended on Monday, which means the Mets have just two days to sign their superstar shortstop to a contract extension.

Francisco Lindor established a self-imposed Opening Day deadline for the Mets to reach an agreement with his agency on a possible long-term deal. There continues to be optimism for that extension, with most of it publicly stemming from Steve Cohen’s tweets.

The Mets owner, a day after he dined with Lindor in Port St. Lucie, opened a friendly banter with fans on Twitter asking about the negotiations. One person predicted Lindor would sign a 10-year contract with the Mets on Monday. “How much you want to bet,” Cohen quipped in response.

Another person asked Cohen if the billionaire owner could “just tell us if he’s going to be extended soon” and Cohen responded: “Well, we have a deadline Mar 31 today is the 29th. It either will or won’t in the next two days.” He said he wasn’t being funny about his last tweet, it’s just “the absolute truth.”

Cohen said if he knew when Lindor was going to accept a deal, which is expected to be worth upwards of $300 million, then he would’ve reported it.

Even as the back-and-forth on Twitter implies the Mets feel good about locking down their shortstop for a possible decade, the discourse within the clubhouse is just as optimistic.

“I think it’s going to work out,” pitcher Taijuan Walker said of Lindor sticking around Queens long term. “I think everyone knows it’s going to work out.”
