Nobody stranded in Mets’ washout

- BY SARAH VALENZUELA

The Mets haven’t even gotten to a week’s worth of games in the 2021 season and they already have a noticeable problem.

After Saturday’s wasted start by ace Jacob deGrom — who notched 14 strikeouts but got no run support — the team was batting .146/.351/.171 with runners in scoring position. That’s 29th in the majors and 14th in the National League.

When asked about how to get players to deliver with runners on, Luis Rojas said he was just going to keep repeating himself.

“I know there’s drills we can do to increase that focus and communication in those situations,” Rojas said. “But the communication of what we need to do in those situations is what we need to be doing. You can’t stop. Those are some of the things that as a coach you gotta keep repeating and repeating and you might tell yourself ‘I keep repeating myself, I keep saying the same thing,’ but that’s coaching.

“You do try different things as far as drills,” Rojas continued, “but as far as what you preach and what you talk about, the situation, and making everyone aware that we’re getting anxious, we’re getting emotional at the plate because we’re seeing traffic, we’re seeing runners at the plate, we’re seeing runners on, it’s okay that you repeat it.”

On Saturday against the Marlins, the Mets went 0-6 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base. In their home opener, they also went 0-6 and left 11 on base.

“One day one person clicks, one day the whole team clicks and those types of things,” Rojas said. “But we’re just gonna keep drilling it. We know that our team is a good offensive team and we know they’re going to start to come through in those big situations.”
