Spears loses bid to speed up hearing

An attempt by Britney Spears to expedite an upcoming hearing in her conservatorship court battle has reportedly been denied.

A judge turned down the pop star’s request to move a Sept. 29 hearing to Aug. 23, according to TMZ, as Spears (inset) continues to push for her father to be removed from her court-ordered conservatorship.

Spears’ lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, contended last week in his request for the date change that, “Every day that passes is another day of avoidable harm and prejudice to Ms. Spears.”

Her legal team can ask again for a date change, however, as the court turned down the request without prejudice, TMZ reported. A formal reason for the denial was not listed.

The “Toxic” singer’s father, Jamie Spears, controls her finances through the highly publicized conservatorship, while a conservator, Jodi Montgomery, handles aspects of her personal life.

Spears, 39, has described the situation as “abusive,” saying at a June court hearing, “The people who did this to me should not get away and be able to walk away so easily. They should be in jail.”

Last week, Jamie Spears claimed in a sworn statement that Montgomery described his daughter as “mentally sick” during a July 9 phone call and mentioned a 5150 psychiatric hold as a possible option.

“Ms. Montgomery explained that my daughter was not timely or properly taking her medications, was not listening to the recommendations of her medical team and refused to even see some of her doctors,” Jamie Spears said in a statement.

Montgomery has since issued a denial.

“Mr. Spears’ declaration misrepresents what Ms. Montgomery said to him in relation to a potential 5150 psychiatric hold for Ms. Spears,” Montgomery’s lawyer, Lauriann Wright, said in a statement. “At no time did Ms. Montgomery express to Mr. Spears that Ms. Spears would currently qualify for such a hold.”

Rosengart contended last week that the conservatorship is causing Spears to lose sleep.

Spears, a Grammy winner known for hits such as “Baby One More Time” and “Oops! ... I Did It Again,” has been under the conservatorship since 2008.
