Here are some of our top stories from the past week:

Hochul’s here: Kathy Hochul (inset) was sworn in as the 57th governor of New York on Tuesday, the first woman to hold the position. Hochul, 62, was former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s lieutenant governor and assumed the mantle in Albany after he resigned in disgrace. Her priorities include getting COVID-19 rental assistance to tenants and taking over the reins of the pandemic recovery. Hochul has already issued a mask mandate for schools statewide. “I want people to believe in their government again,” Hochul, a Dem-important ocrat, said. “It’s to me that people have faith. Our strength comes from the faith and the confidence of the people who put us in these offices and I take that very seriously.”

Take a shot: New York City’s public school teachers and staff have to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by the end of next month, Mayor de Blasio announced Monday. More than 148,000 educators and school workers — including custodians, cafeteria workers and outside contractors — will have until Sept. 27 to show proof of receiving at least one dose of the vaccine. “We know this is going to help ensure that

everyone is safe,” the mayor said. The move came the same day the federal Food and Drug Administration approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination.

Cells closed: The troubled federal jail where fiendish financier Jeffery Epstein hanged himself is closing, it was reported Thursday. The Metropolitan Correctional Center in lower Manhattan could be shut down as soon as the coming month, jail sources said. The facility will be shuttered “at least temporarily,” the Justice Department said. The News has documented the dilapidated and unsanitary conditions at the jail since at least August 2019, when Epstein took his life while awaiting trial on child sex trafficking charges.
