3 fatal overdoses at Qns. home, but medics save a fourth victim
Three people fatally overdosed inside a Queens home — but medics managed to save the life of a fourth victim, police said Sunday.
Medics responding to a call for an unconscious person found two men and a woman dead inside the two-story brick home on 106th Road near 180th St. in Jamaica about 11:15 p.m. on Saturday.
A 59-year-old man, a 56-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman all died at the scene from fatal overdoses, authorities said. Their names were not immediately released.
A 58-year-old woman found unconscious in the home survived after first responders administered two doses of naloxone, a drug that reverses overdoses, police said. Medics took her to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition.
The harrowing incident comes after New York City saw an increase in deadly drug use during 2020. Overdoses increased 36% during the first three quarters of 2020, the latest data the city has available.
On Friday, police found a dead woman in her 40s surrounded by drug paraphernalia in Highbridge Park near Edgecombe Ave. and W. 157th St., near Coogan’s Bluff. The park is a known safe haven for drug users.
The surge in overdose deaths is attributed to isolated drug use during the coronavirus pandemic and a devastating flood of fentanyl. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid poisoning U.S. drug supplies, contributed to the deaths of hip-hop artist
Mac Miller and comedian Fuquan Johnson.
“The disruption to daily life due to the COVID-19 pandemic has hit those with substance use disorder hard,” said former federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield, after the organization released data pointing to a nationwide uptick in overdoses during the pandemic.
“As we continue the fight to end this pandemic, it’s important to not lose sight of different groups being affected in other ways. We need to take care of people suffering from unintended consequences.”
