Brewers’ Braun, suspended for PEDs in 2013, retires

the Brewers’ home run leader who was suspended in 2013 without pay for violating MLB’s Joint Drug Agreement, announced his retirement on Tuesday.

Braun hasn’t played all season and said during spring training that he was leaning toward retirement. The 2011 NL MVP made it official Tuesday in a video the Brewers posted on Twitter.

Braun, 37, was one of baseball’s best hitters from 2007-12, but was never the same after he was suspended midway through the 2013 season for using performanc­e-enhancing drugs. He fought allegation­s at first, but eventually acknowledg­ed that he took banned substances.

EX-BRUIN STANFIELD DIES

Former Bruins center Fred Stanfield, the mild-mannered sidekick to Bobby Orr on the high-scoring teams of the early 1970s, has died. He was 77.

Stanfield died Monday and the Bruins announced his death Tuesday. A cause of death was not given.

A native of Toronto, Stanfield played six seasons in Boston, helping the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 1970 and 1972 as the No. 2 center behind Phil Esposito. He was acquired from the Blackhawks in 1967 as part of one of the most famous trades in NHL history, swapped along with Esposito and Ken Hodge for Gilles Marotte, Pit Martin and Jack Norris.

PELE OUT OF INTENSIVE CARE

Retired Brazilian soccer star Pelé was moved out of intensive care on Tuesday as he continues to recover from surgery to remove a tumor from his colon.

The 80-year-old Edson Arantes do Nascimento was in good clinical condition and will remain “from now on recovering in his room” at Albert Einstein Hospital, the Sao Paulo facility said in a statement.

Pelé said he is ready “to play 90 minutes, plus extra time” after leaving intensive care.

NYCFC, DALLAS TIE

Jáder Obrian scored two goals to help FC Dallas tie NYCFC, 3-3, on Tuesday night.

Dallas (6-10-9) has only lost one of its last six away matches — with three draws. NYCFC (10-8-5) saw its seven-game home winning streak snapped. The seven-match run was a club record.

Dallas’ only lead came in the fourth minute, when Obrian took advantage of a defensive mistake and easily sent it into the back of the net from close range. Dallas tied it, 2-2, in the 63rd when Jesus Ferreira ran past the defense for Ricardo Pepi’s through ball and sent goalkeeper Sean Johnson diving the wrong way. Obrian tied it at 3 by sending a shot from the corner of the 6-yard box off the hand of Johnson.

CREW TOPS RED BULLS

Darlington Nagbe and Miguel Berry scored 14 minutes apart late in the second half and the Columbus Crew beat the Red Bulls, 2-1, on Tuesday night.

Columbus (8-11-6) had lost eight of its last nine, including two straight defeats. The Red Bulls (6-11-5) are winless in nine straight visits to Columbus, including the playoffs.
