The toxic demanding of individualism

- Claudette Mobley

BI have had enough of the “my body, my choice” nonsense regarding COVID vaccines. I would remind folks that we operate under many mandates in this life. You are mandated to have a driver’s license and car insurance if you want to drive. You are mandated to wear seat belts in cars and taxis, helmets for bike and motorcycle riding, and kids have to have certain vaccinations before they enter school. When I joined the Air Force, I had to receive vaccinations in case I was deployed to another country. What is one more? And I don’t need to hear that a mandate encroaches on freedom. Your demand for freedom stops when my health is at stake.

As a retired nurse, I am appalled at the defiance of nurses and other health care workers who don’t want to wear masks or get vaccinated. What is wrong with you? Hospital and nursing home patients should not have to worry about whether they’ll be exposed to a dangerous virus while they are undergoing treatment. Be careful: If patients begin to demand proof of vaccination before they accept treatment, hospitals and staff will be in trouble.

And as far as teachers are concerned, I am glad that I do not have a school-aged child. If my child’s teacher refused to wear a mask, my child would not be in that class or that school. What happened to the concern about public health? The only way to combat the pandemic is to follow the scientific recommendations. We’re all exhausted and tired of wearing masks but if everyone doesn’t do their part, this will not end.
