‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ swings into record books
Spider-Man has swung his way into the record books.
The latest movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “No Way Home,” has made more than $1 billion at the global box office just 12 days after it hit theaters.
Only “Avengers: Endgame” and “Avengers: Infinity War” have done so faster, in five and 11 days, respectively.
That makes “No Way Home” the first movie to hit the eight-figure threshold since 2019, most of which has been spent in the COVID-19 pandemic. The last was “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which was released in December 2019.
The flick stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Zendaya as MJ in the third part of the trilogy, as the high school student asks Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to restore his secret identity by opening up the multiverse.
“No Way Home” is also now Sony’s best-grossing film domestically, besting 2017’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.”
In the U.S. the movie tallied around $81.5 million in its second weekend, an almost 70% drop from its first, when fans rushed to the theaters to avoid spoilers.
The animated “Sing 2” brought in $23.8 million. The jukebox musical stars Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon, Taron Egerton, Pharrell, Eric André, Halsey, Chelsea Peretti and Bono.
Warner Bros.’ “The Matrix Resurrections” came in below expectations with $12 million, a total lowered by the movie’s availability to stream on HBO Max. The long-awaited fourth installment of the series stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss 60 years after “Revolutions,” with Neo trying to fit into his new, low-key life until a new version of Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) returns with a red pill.
“The King’s Man,” the prequel starring Ralph Fiennes, made $10 million, the Kurt Warner biopic “American Underdog,” which opened on Christmas Day, drew $6.2 million from an overwhelmingly male audience. Zachary Levi plays the free agent quarterback who rose to NFL fame.
