The new “Spider-Man” movie continues to spin money at the box office.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” grossed a projected $52.7 million at North American theaters between Friday and Sunday, marking the third straight weekend the superhero movie has led all films.

The Marvel flick has now made $609.9 million at domestic theaters, which is good for 10th all-time, and $1.37 billion globally, 12th.

New Year’s weekend was the latest heroic effort by “No Way Home,” which had the second-biggest opening weekend ever last month when it made $260 million domestically from Dec. 17-19.

The film stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man and centers on a portal to alternate dimensions being mistakenly opened, allowing villains from past iterations of the franchise to enter.

The highest-grossing movie ever is James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi flick “Avatar,” which made more than $2.8 billion worldwide. Second place is occupied by the 2019 Marvel blockbuster “Avengers: Endgame,” which grossed nearly $2.8 billion.

“No Way Home,” which boasts a 94% approval rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, is the only film released during the COVID-19 pandemic to make more than $1 billion worldwide.

The pandemic has presented repeated challenges for the movie industry. Overall, movies made approximately $4.5 billion at domestic cinemas in 2021, which is down by about 60% from what theaters grossed in 2019, according to ComScore.

“No Way Home” is the third installment in the latest “Spider-Man” movie series, which also stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and Marisa Tomei.

Finishing second at the domestic box office during New Year’s weekend was the animated “Sing 2,” which earned an estimated $19.6 million. It was followed by the spy prequel “The King’s Man,” which is expected to make $4.5 million, and the Kurt Warner football biopic “American Underdog,” which is on track to gross $4.1 million.

Each of those films were released during the week of Christmas.

New theatrical releases in January include the spy thriller “The 355”; the fifth installment to the “Scream” slasher franchise, and the Jared Leto-led “Morbius,” which is based on a vampire from the Marvel comics.
