Sun. Jan. 16th-Sat. Jan. 22nd ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED MONDAY, MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.’S BIRTHDAY

- SAM SCHWARTZ Gridlock Sam

SUMMONS ALERT: Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, is an ASP suspension day, but not a major parking holiday; all other rules are in effect! Be sure to follow posted signs and avoid getting a ticket.

Expect a steady stream of traffic into the city on Monday from travelers returning from the long weekend, including on the Cross-Bronx, LIE, GW Bridge, Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, VZ Bridge, NJ Turnpike from Exit 13 to the GW Bridge, the Goethals Bridge, and the Outerbridge Crossing. The Grand Central, Van Wyck, and Belt will be slow around JFK and LGA.

The Knicks will host the Hornets Monday at 1 p.m., the Timberwolves Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., and the Pelicans Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Maple Leafs will take on the Rangers at MSG on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

At Barclays, Disney on Ice takes to the rink for the Let’s Celebrate tour, Wednesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.

Keep in mind that MTA operations are being impacted by the surge in Covid cases; at press time, the B, W, and Z remain suspended, and there is no express service on the 6 and 7, the D in the Bronx, and the F and J in Brooklyn. With conditions changing rapidly, I strongly recommend checking the MTA website in advance of every trip for the latest updates.

Monday to Friday, 9:45 p.m. to 5 a.m., there will be no J service between Delancey St.-Essex St. and Broad St. Use nearby 4 and 6 stations for stops in Manhattan; for service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, consider using the L.

Flushing-bound 7 trains will skip 82nd St.-Jackson Hts., 90th St.-Elmhurst Ave., 103rd St.-Corona Plaza and 111th St. Tuesday through Friday from 10:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mailbag Dear Gridlock Sam,

Every year, many new laws go into effect on January 1st. Are there any new rules for the road of which we should be aware in 2022?

Dear A,

A

One change to expect this year is a new state pilot program which will install speeding cameras in road work zones. Expect $50 fines for first infractions, going up to $100 if you rack up three or more within 18 months. Reducing speeding in work zones should help protect both drivers and workers; between 2010 and 2016 in New York, 50 people died and 1100 were injured in crashes in these areas.
