Latin American Music Awards to honor Ukraine
The 2022 Latin American Music Awards won’t only be about honoring the biggest names in the industry.
This year’s star-studded ceremony on April 21 will be unabashedly political as it spreads an international message of solidarity with Ukraine while the war-torn nation continues its brave fight against Russian invaders.
With the show’s theme of “La Música Nos Une” (Music brings us together), NK (Nastya Kamenskykh), a Ukrainian pop and R&B singer, TV host and actress will perform a bilingual version of “Where is the Love” with the Black Eyed Peas to kick off the ceremony.
Broadcast live from the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, the show will feature musical appearances by a litany of Latino luminaries, many of whom will be premiering their latest songs for the first time on television.
Among the acts performing are Mexico’s Calibre 50, who will showcase a new vocalist for their song “Míranos Ahora”; Puerto Rican singer Ozuna will sing his “Deprimida” and then join Panamanian star Boza on “Apretadito”; Los Angeles Azules will perform the worldwide premiere of “Esa Parte de Mi” along with Mexican singer Sofia Reyes and Colombia’s Esteman, and Argentinian reggaeton artist Nicki Nicole will premiere “Otra noche.”
Mexico will be represented by regional artist Gerardo Ortiz’s television premiere of “Tranquilito,” while veteran singer Gloria Trevi premieres her hit “La Recaída.” Puerto Rico’s Luis Fonsi will perform a new song, “Dolce” for the first time on TV, as will Prince Royce, who will duet with Argentina’s María Becerra on Royce’s “Te Espero.” Chiquis will cover Daniela Romo’s hit “Quiero Amanecer con Alguien,” and Puerto Rican reggaeton artist Farruko will perform “My Lova.”
LAMA nominees include Bad Bunny, who earned the most nods with 10. Jhay Cortez has eight nominations, followed by seven each for Colombian artists J Balvin and Karol G and Puerto Rican singer Rauw Alejandro.
Mexican icon Lupita D’Alessio will receive the Legend Award from fellow veteran José Luis Rodríguez “El Puma,” while regional music artist Christian Nodal will be given the Extraordinary Evolution Award.
The ceremony will be hosted by actors
Rafael Amaya, Jacqueline Bracamontes, and Cristián de la Fuente, and air on Telemundo at 8 p.m.
