Make your home a safe haven from the world

- BY REBECCA GITANA

With tragedy hitting the front page constantly it’s easy to see why many of us feel some sort of trauma when we interact with the outside world. The good news is that a mindful and healing home can become a beautiful retreat from everything happening outside.

Begin this intentional magic the moment you walk through the door.

Take off your shoes and outerwear, leaving the city where it belongs. Think of all the places you go such as the subway, your workplace, and the streets themselves. Do you truly want those vibrations all over your personal environment? Take this step even further by showering or changing upon arrival. These practices immediately lower stress levels as you release the day.

Another way to make your home feel like a sigh of relief is to utilize the power of uplifting sounds. Leave your radio on and return to a home enveloped in soothing rhythms. I personally love WBGO 88.3 FM. Everything they play from jazz to dance classics is inspirational to the soul. Plus, since they are listener-sponsored you won’t have to absorb commercials or anything else that brings the world in. At long last, you are back in your safe-haven!

In addition, review the sounds coming through your television. Sounds have the power to evoke emotions which is why scary movies sound the way they do. The news isn’t too far off. Every opening sequence is intended to bring you to attention and put you on edge. If you must watch the news, try watching on a lower volume or with closed captioning on. Limit your time and don’t watch the news cycle over and over again. Once is enough.

Lastly, channel the power of plant medicine via aromatherapy and plants themselves. Aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment that uses essential oils to relax the mind, reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and more. Diffuse oils like lavender, sandalwood, eucalyptus, and frankincense to support you as you recover and regroup.

Incorporating plants themselves bring happiness into the home. They are proven to lower stress levels, improve moods, reduce fatigue and even help to recycle negative energy into positive energy. Create your own oasis for home healing today!
