almost cut it in half by moving from single patrol to dual patrol,” he said. “That was a substantial decrease that we were not able to put police throughout the transit system. We’re going back to single patrol ... and that is going to double the amount of coverage.”

Some city law enforcement veterans have criticized the lack of increased police funding in this year’s budget framework, citing concern about increasing attrition rates in the NYPD ranks and a spike in most major crimes across the city.

“The current staffing/retirement crises showing a sharp decline in officers to handle a growing workload, disorder and crime rate is in sharp contrast to the new record-breaking city budget city officials are celebrating which has no money for additional cops,” former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

In Monday’s television appearance, Adams lauded Bratton as “one of the best law enforcement minds we in the city,” but said he’s not worried about an uptick in officers leaving the NYPD because his administration has “an amazing recruitment campaign” in the pipeline.

“People will always want to join the New York City Police

Department,” said Adams, who’s a retired NYPD captain. “It’s one of the best careers you could have in the city.”

In terms of crime, Adams noted that shooting and murder rates have in recent weeks seen a slight drop. “We are beginning to see some of the results of the systems that we have put in place,” Adams said.

In contrast to Adams’ assessment, shooting and murder rates remain elevated when compared with prepandemic levels. In addition, most other major crimes, like robberies and vehicle thefts, are sharply up this year as compared with 2021.
