Queens teen is mourned as he is buried near tragic swim pal

Sobbing family and friends bid a heartbreaking goodbye Thursday to a 13-year-old Queens boy who drowned alongside a school pal last week in a tragic accident.

The tears flowed freely at the funeral for Ryan Wong, remembered one day after the farewell to his friend and fellow victim Daniel Persaud. His distraught relatives gathered around the youth’s open casket, filled with red, white and blue flowers, at the emotional sendoff inside the Leo F. Kearns Funeral Home in South Richmond Hill.

Four screens displayed pictures and videos from Wong’s tooshort life, while many mourners donned T-shirts bearing his name and picture. The message on the front read “In Loving Memory,” while the back declared “Rest In Peace Ryan Wong.”

Handwritten messages sat surrounded by flowers and photos of the young victim just a short distance from his casket. “Rest in peace, little Ryan,” read one, while a second message said simply, “We will never forget you.”

According to police, Wong (photo) and his friend Persaud, also 13, joined several friends in Broad Channel around 11:40 a.m. last Friday before they tumbled into the water off an outcropping of rocks in Jamaica Bay.

The two boys lived just 10 blocks away from each other in Richmond Hill, and Wong’s casket was driven past his friend’s home on his way to burial in the Maple Grove Cemetery.

The funeral was the second in as many days, following the Wednesday farewell for Persaud.

Family members said the teen buddies, both bright and responsible, were the last kids anyone expected to cut school. But they joined some friends in skipping out as the last days of the school year played out.

Wong’s grandmother, like the rest of her family, was at a loss to explain what led the two boys to do something so out of character.

“Everyone is just shocked,” she told the Daily News. “He’s a very good kid, he doesn’t give trouble.”
