Why is it still open season on American wolves?
Staten Island: The Rocky Mountain states of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming are slaughtering wolves arbitrarily under the guise of “predator management” — not because the wolf has downed one or two cows (actually, less than 1% of livestock loss is because of a wolf) — but because of centuries-old vitriol for this keystone species. The hatred runs so deep that our beloved Yellowstone wolves are now at risk. Last year, 25 Yellowstone radio-collared wolves were slaughtered the moment they crossed park boundaries while more than 1,000 were killed in the surrounding region. Why? Because federal protections have yet to be restored to these Rocky Mountain wolves. Montana has just announced its proposed plan for the upcoming hunting season to allow another 450 wolves to be killed, plus 10 more Yellowstone wolves, via barbaric methods. This is species genocide.
I’ve loved wolves since I was a child. They provide ecosystem benefits to humans, keeping healthy our parks and wild places where all life thrives. I voted for President Biden based on his environmental promises which thus far, he and Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland have largely overlooked. There is no science in the indiscriminate slaughter of a species, especially one that the American people want on their landscape, and it sets a very bad precedent for other predator management.
I implore the Biden administration to put the Rocky Mountain wolves back on the Endangered Species List and stop the slaughter of America’s wolves before it’s too late! Patricia Adamo
