Catholic Education: Faith-Based,Future-Focused
Faith, community, and academic excellence have always been hallmarks of a Catholic education. These values have remained steadfast throughout the Archdiocese of New York’s long and distinguished history. Our mission hasn’t changed because it works. From their founding more than 200 years ago, right through to the present day, Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York have placed special emphasis on providing educational opportunities for immigrants.
Inspired by our rich past
and building on that tradition of excellence, we continue our mission to educate students intellectually, spiritually, morally, and physically in a safe, nurturing environment. We remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a Catholic education to every child who seeks it.
Since 2019 and throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, the
archdiocesean school system has made an unprecedented investment in wireless and technology infrastructure in our schools. This improved capability has paved the way for exciting teaching and learning innovations. The expansion of blended learning doesn’t just leverage computers and educational software as instruction tools. It also facilitates
individualized learning, testing, and measures that allow our faculty to address every child’s unique learning needs.
The increased focus on technology has provided data to inform instruction for better educational outcomes and helped transition schools to a more detailed, informative report card, engaging families in their child’s education. Thanks to generous benefactors and supporters, we have employed programs like Engineering Tomorrow to bolster interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). All of these efforts highlight the innovative approaches the archdiocese has undertaken and continues to promote throughout our system.
The proactive steps we took to keep our schools open and safe made a difference in combating pandemic-induced learning loss. Since our last testing period in 2019, our English Language Arts (ELA) scores have jumped
by 7.3%. Our math scores held steady, with a slight decline from pre-pandemic levels. In addition, Catholic school students continue to outpace New York City public school students in terms of the percentage of students meeting or exceeding proficiency standards in both Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA).
Test scores only tell part of the story of a well-rounded education. Catholic school students are expected to take their studies seriously and are encouraged to use the gifts God has given them to their fullest potential, and they do. Their results are impressive: 99% of our Catholic high school seniors graduate and have gone on to become respected leaders in the fields of law, finance, education, technology, public service, civil service, athletics, and just about every other profession imaginable.
Catholic schools celebrate diversity in a community of shared values and welcome children of all faiths and backgrounds. Today, the Archdiocese of New York educates over 53,000 students across 166 elementary and high schools that include excellent early childhood and special education programs. In fact, the Archdiocese of New York is one of the largest providers of early childhood programs in New York state, with thousands of children in pre-K3, pre-K4, and free Universal Pre-K (3K and Pre-K For All) programs. We are committed to maintaining both the quality and affordability of our schools. Financial aid and scholarships are available at many schools for the 2023-2024 school year.
Our online application web page at catholicschoolsny.org/apply is available 24/7 throughout Catholic Schools Week and beyond. Parents can find a school and schedule a tour on catholicschoolsny.org or by calling our bilingual parent helpline, (646) 794-2885, from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday-Friday. We encourage families to come, visit and enroll. A Catholic education is the best investment a parent can make in their child’s future.
