Fetterman goes to hosp for depression treatment

- BY DAVID MATTHEWS

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman checked into a hospital Wednesday night to “receive treatment for clinical depression,” his chief of staff said Thursday.

“Last night, Sen. John Fetterman checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to receive treatment for clinical depression,” Adam Jentleson said in a statement. “While John has experienced depression off and on throughout his life, it only became severe in recent weeks.

“On Monday, John was evaluated by Dr. Brian Monahan, the attending physician of the United States Congress. Yesterday, Dr. Monahan recommended inpatient care at Walter Reed. John agreed, and he is receiving treatment on a voluntary basis.”

Fetterman (inset) was hospitalized last week at George Washington University after feeling lightheaded, but tests revealed he didn’t have a stroke. He was discharged after two days.

Fetterman suffered a stroke during the Democratic primary last May but won the nomination while hospitalized and went on to win the general election in November.

Gisele Barreto Fetterman, the senator’s wife, asked for privacy in a pair of tweets on Thursday.

“After what he’s been through in the past year, there’s probably no one who wanted to talk about his own health less than John. I’m so proud of him for asking for help and getting the care he needs,” she said.

“This is a difficult time for our family, so please respect our privacy. For us, the kids come first. Take care of yourselves. Hold your loved ones close, you are not alone.”

Fetterman’s colleagues in the Senate also voiced their support. “Millions of Americans struggle with their mental health. I am proud of Sen. Fetterman for getting the help he needs and for publicly acknowledging his challenges to break down the stigma for others,” Pennsylvania’s senior Sen. Bob Casey said. “Terese and I are sending our prayers to John, Gisele, and the Fetterman family.”

“Happy to hear Sen. Fetterman is getting the help he needs and deserves,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said.
