Two administrators were wounded in a shooting at a Denver high school on Wednesday morning, police said.

The two male victims were taken to a nearby hospital after the shooting at East High School. One was in critical condition while the other was in serious but stable condition.

Cops identified the suspect as 17-year-old Austin Lyle, a student at East High. Lyle fled the scene before officers arrived, Denver police said in an update. As of Wednesday evening, he remained on the loose.

The weapon used in the shooting had not been recovered when authorities held a mid-morning press conference.

“We are looking for the suspect, we will find the suspect,” Denver police chief Ron Thomas said, later adding that officers didn’t know where he was but “do know where he lives.”

Lyle was searched daily for weapons before entering school, Thomas said. Wednesday’s shooting occurred during the routine search in an office near the front of the school, away from other students.

The school was placed on lockdown through the morning, and students were slowly released after police gave an all-clear. East High will remain closed for the rest of the week, and two police officers will be stationed at the school for the rest of the academic year, Denver Public Schools superintendent Alex Marrero said.

Marrero explained that Lyle’s required pre-school searches were a punishment for his previous behavior.

In a separate incident on Feb. 13, 16-year-old student Luis Garcia was shot outside East High. He died from his injuries weeks later, and East High students responded by marching on the Colorado State Capitol Building and demanding action to prevent gun violence.

Earlier this week in Texas, a student was fatally shot at Lamar High School in Arlington, and a fellow student was arrested and charged with capital murder.

East High sits about 10 miles north of Columbine High School, where two student gunmen killed 12 students and one teacher in April 1999.
