The Israel lobby’s goals undermine U.S. voters

-

Manhattan: Your article on Rep. Jamaal Bowman (“Jamaal has snared a ‘PAC’ of big bucks,” Jan. 14) is a clear attack hack job. First, calling for a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel is the right thing to do. Right-wing Zionists object. They perfected the tactic of pouring millions into a race under the guise of Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI). It is quite successful and a blow to democracy, and we will be inundated with their ads.

Looking at the evidence behind the hysteria about Bowman’s campaign is laughable. Accepting $5,000 from a real estate company over a four-year period in no way suggests his campaign is beholden to real estate interests. Nonetheless, your article insists Bowman (photo) is not true to his core beliefs. That his campaign returns corporate, real estate and lobbyist donations is the key point here. Any entity can donate to a campaign. What the campaign does after the donation is made is critical.

The foolish attempt to create a controversy out of nothing obfuscates a far more important fact: the attempt to unseat a sitting Congress member by DMFI, a political action committee dedicated to removing Congress members who are critical of the Israeli government actions in Palestine, even if she or he is Jewish and a Zionist, like former House of Representatives member Andy Levin in Michigan.

Those in Bowman’s district must remember that this type of hit piece comes from people who do not live in the district nor care about the critical issues of that district, whether it is school funding, increased support for attaining quality health care or any other local concerns.

Full disclosure: I am Jewish. Criticizing the Israeli government actions is not antisemitic. Lee Levin
