COLOR OF COLLEGE HOOPS IS UCONN BLUE, YANKS STILL NEED MORE ARMS & PROBLEMS IN DALLAS START WITH JERRY …

-

It sometimes seems difficult for people to process that over the past 25 years of men’s college basketball, the capital of the sport hasn’t been Durham, or Chapel Hill, or Lawrence, Kan. or Lexington.

Or Villanova.

Or UCLA.

No.

The capital of college basketball has become Storrs, Conn.

Starting when Jim Calhoun won his first title, over Duke, in 1999, the UConn Huskies have won five national championships.

Duke has won three since then, Carolina has won three, Jay Wright won two at Villanova.

But the Huskies, who used to be in the Yankee Conference, have won those five, with three different coaches: Calhoun.

Kevin Ollie.

Danny Hurley.

Now Hurley has the No. 1 team in the country again.

They always talk about blue-blood programs in college hoops.

The blue is now the navy blue of UConn. Incidentally?

In the same 25-year span, the Lady Huskies have won 10 national championships.

Nothing like this will ever happen again in college sports.

l The Yankees don’t have enough starting pitching — at least as their staff is presently constituted — to win this season.

It’s one of the reasons they decided they needed to go get Marcus Stroman.

By the way?

I’m sure you’re as relieved as I am that Stroman and Brian Cashman have managed to patch things up without couples counseling.

l The people who schedule major tennis tournaments just never learn.

But at least we now know that it’s not just the U.S. Open that can’t get it right, since Daniil Medvedev’s match against Emil Ruusuvuori at the Australian ended around 3:30 a.m., Melbourne time, the other morning.

Ruusuvuori lost, but I still think it was the best performance ever in a Grand Slam event by someone with four u’s in his name.

l I’m sorry, but when did Wink Martindale turn into Bill Belichick on the defensive side of the ball?

l Just moved on to Season 3 now of “Slow Horses,” from Mick Herron’s brilliant Slough House books.

The problem is that once I’m done, I have to begin the long wait until Season 4.

l Let’s see if I have this straight:

All those Republican heads exploded after the last election because of voting machines, but we start the race to elect the next president with people carrying around paper bags in Iowa.

l You know why Jerry Jones constantly over-evaluates his players in Dallas?

Because Jerry Jones is one of the people picking those players.

At least the Packers finally cracked the code last Sunday with Mike McCarthy.

They just needed McCarthy on the other sideline.

l It really was stunning watching the Eagles show about as much life as roadkill after starting out 10-1. l Jets fans should take heart: Jordan Love might be available in about 15 years.
