A man died in a fall between cars at a Brooklyn subway stop after he got his arm stuck in a closing subway door, police said Wednesday — a change in the official accounts of an incident initially blamed on subway surfing.

The unidentified man, believed to be between 50 and 60 years old, was trying to board an out-ofservice Q train on the southbound track at the Prospect Park station, near the park’s Lincoln Road entrance in Prospect Lefferts Gardens at around 8:25 p.m. Tuesday.

The train involved in the incident had been taken out of passenger service because of a problem with the system that alerts train crews that all its doors are properly closed, says an MTA report made shortly after the incident.

The incident occurred as the train sat in the Prospect Park station and its crew awaited instructions on its movement, said the report, which the Daily News reviewed. The plan was to take the train to the Coney Island yard for repairs.

For unknown reasons, the crew mistakenly opened the train’s doors, the report says.

It was not immediately clear how long the train doors stayed open, though at least three adults and one child boarded unbeknownst to the crew, the report says.

The man — who, witnesses told a transit worker, had been talking to himself and pacing the platform — made a run for the train.

According to a police account, when the doors suddenly closed on the train, the man’s arm got caught.

The train rolled forward, and the man was dragged several feet down the platform, at which point the doors opened again, said police.

But as the train kept going, the man was thrown between two subway cars and fell to the tracks, said cops.

The train ran over the man, who was declared dead at the scene.

The victim remained unidentified Wednesday. Responding officers reported that he carried no ID, said police.

Between January and August 2023, some 62 people were reported to have died on subway tracks. It was unclear how many of those deaths involved falls.
