OF Allen gets invite to Bomber camp: report

- GARY PHILLPS

Greg Allen is coming back… again.

The 30-year-old has agreed to a minor league deal with the Yankees, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray. The deal includes an invitation to spring training.

Allen, a speedy outfielder who can play all three positions, suited up for the Yankees in 2021 and 2023, totaling 37 major league games for the club. A career .231 hitter, Allen batted .217 with one home run and one RBI over 22 games last season.

Allen began the season in Boston’s system and finished it in Milwaukee’s. The Yankees acquired him in May in a rare trade with the Red Sox.

The Yankees designated Allen for assignment in August.

Allen has also played for Cleveland, San Diego and Pittsburgh while totaling 304 major league games. According to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman, his new deal will pay him $1.1 million if he’s in the majors. He would get bonuses of $50,000 for 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450 and 500 plate appearances. Sherman added that Allen also has upward mobility clauses for May 15 and June 15. That means if another team wants him on its major league roster on those dates, the Yankees have to promote him or trade him to that team.

Such a clause is what prompted the Red Sox to trade Allen last year.

Allen is the latest outfielder with big league experience the Yankees have added this offseason. Others include Oscar González and Luis González, as well as a few utilitymen who can play the outfield.

The Yankees recently lost Bubba Thompson, another speedster, to the Twins on waivers.
