Mahomes’ dad arrested

Former Met pitcher and Super Bowl father charged with DWI

-

The father of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was arrested in East Texas on at least his third charge of driving while intoxicated, according to jail records. The legal issue comes as the younger Mahomes prepares to lead his team into the Super Bowl against the 49ers.

Patrick Mahomes Sr., 54, a former pitcher for the Mets, was arrested Saturday night in Tyler and his bond was set at $10,000. He was released on Sunday, according to jail records from Smith County, Texas.

Mahomes’ attorney did not immediately respond to a voicemail from The Associated Press seeking comment.

His arrest comes a little more than a week before his son leads the Chiefs against San Francisco in Las Vegas as Kansas City attempts to repeat as Super Bowl champion.

The younger Mahomes likely will face questions at Super Bowl media night tonight about whether his father’s arrest will be a distraction. That could be a storyline going into next weekend.

Mahomes Sr. was arrested on the same charge in 2019 and was sentenced to 40 days in jail, Smith County records show.

Mahomes Sr. played 11 seasons (19922003) in Major League Baseball as a pitcher.

The right-hander was 42-39 with a 5.47 ERA in 308 career games (63 starts) for the Twins, Red Sox, Mets, Rangers, Cubs and Pirates. He was part of the 1999 NL playoffs with the Mets.

Last month, the quarterback’s brother, Jackson Mahomes, had three felony charges against him dismissed. He had been accused of grabbing a woman’s neck and kissing her without her consent.

PEBBLE BEACH FINAL POSTPONED

The final round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was postponed until today, weather permitting, after the start was delayed Sunday for hours amid a forecast of more rain on a soggy course and high wind that could cut short the PGA Tour’s first “signature event” to 54 holes.

Wyndham Clark two-putted for birdie on his final hole on Saturday for a tournament-record 60 and finished the day with a one-shot lead over Ludvig Aberg. Clark would be declared the winner if the final round cannot be completed.

The start of the final round initially was delayed by just over two hours early Sunday, and then came another two-hour delay. The PGA Tour eventually postponed the round to today, citing inclement weather and safety concerns. Even if play began Sunday, it could not finish before dark. And that was increasingly unlikely as the system of wild wind was approaching the Monterey Peninsula.

Gary Young, the PGA Tour’s chief referee, said the priority would be to finish 72 holes, even if the tournament wasn’t a signature event with an 80-man field and $20 million purse.

While only a three-quarters of inch of rain fell overnight, the course was so soaked that a dozen golf balls already have been lost this week from plugging in the soft turn. Rory McIlroy on Thursday had to use fingers from two hands to pry a ball from the fairway.

The National Weather Service said gusts could reach 60 mph and issued a high-wind advisory for the rest of Sunday. All tournament facilities at Pebble Beach remained closed.

UCONN TOPS STORM WOMEN

Aaliyah Edwards scored a career-high 33 points, Paige Bueckers added 26 and No. 11 UConn defeated St. John’s, 78-63, on Sunday.

Edwards and Bueckers combined to score the first 17 of Connecticut’s 18 points in the fourth quarter. The string was broken by a free throw from KK Arnold with 96 seconds remaining.
