McAdoo set to join Patriots coaching staff

-

Former Giants coach Ben McAdoo is working out a deal to join the Patriots as a senior offensive assistant, a person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press.

The 46-year-old McAdoo was the Panthers offensive coordinator under Matt Rhule in 2022.

Joining the staff of new Patriots coach Jerod Mayo will reunite McAdoo with Alex Van Pelt, who was recently hired as New England’s offensive coordinator. McAdoo was the quarterbacks coach for the Packers in 2012 and 2013 when Van Pelt was the running backs coach.

McAdoo was the Giants offensive coordinator under Tom Coughlin from 2014-15 before he was promoted to head coach in 2016.

He went 11-6 in his first season, ending a four-year playoff drought.

But it fell apart the following season after a 2-10 start that included the mismanagement of the benching of two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning.

EAGLES HIRE OC

Kellen Moore has joined the Eagles’ staff as offensive coordinator after already filling that role with two other NFL teams over the past five years.

Eagles coach Nick Sirianni announced the hire of Moore on Monday.

Moore had worked as the offensive coordinator for the Chargers this season as part of a staff headed by Brandon Staley, who was fired as head coach on Dec. 15. Moore interviewed for the Chargers head coaching job that eventually went to former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.

Before joining the Charger staff, Moore had been on the Cowboys staff from 2018-22. He was offensive coordinator from 2019-22.

SYRACUSE DISMISSES FORWARD

Syracuse has dismissed Benny Williams from its men’s basketball program.

The school announced Williams’ exit Tuesday without disclosing the reason for the 6-foot-9 forward’s removal. The statement announcing the decision said “everyone involved with the program wishes Benny the best.”

Williams had been suspended for the first two games of Syracuse’s season because of a violation of team rules.

He was averaging 5.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 17 minutes in 18 games this season. Williams totaled 7.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 22.3 minutes per game last season.

TRAE AN ALL-STAR

Atlanta’s Trae Young is going back to the All-Star Game after all, and Toronto’s Scottie Barnes will play in the NBA’s showcase event for the first time.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver picked Young and Barnes as injury replacements on Tuesday, adding them to the Eastern Conference roster for the Feb. 18 game in Indianapolis. Young — who was second in fan voting that played a role in determining the All-Star starters — is now an All-Star for the third time and Barnes is making his debut in the game.

They replaced Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid and the Knicks’ Julius Randle.
