Boy, 14, arrested in Bronx shooting that killed immig

- BY THOMAS TRACY

NYPD detectives have arrested a 14-year-old boy who played a role in a Bronx subway station shooting that left one dead and five wounded, cops said Friday.

The young teen, who was not named because of his age, was also wounded in the shooting.

Detectives on Thursday charged the teen with murder, attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon for the Feb. 12 gang-related shooting at the Mt. Eden station on the No. 4 line.

He’s expected to be arraigned as a juvenile offender Monday, police sources with knowledge of the case said.

Cops had already arrested 16-year-old Langel Jones, who was ordered held without bail on murder charges. Jones is charged as an adult. A 15-year-old boy who was with Jones is still being sought, cops said.

Jones and the 15-year-old who was with him are members of the D Block crew, say police. “D Block” stands for Davidson Ave., NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told reporters last month.

Jones and the 15-year-old suspect were walking through the train when they spotted the 14-year-old, who is affiliated with the Burnside crew, cops said.

The younger teen was responsible for a Jan. 15 gang-related shooting against the D Block crew outside a bodega on Davidson Ave. cops said.

During the “chance encounter” the three teens pulled guns and began firing from opposite ends of the subway car as the train entered the station, said cops.

The three teens continued to shoot as they ran out onto the platform, cops said.

An estimated 19 shots were fired, hitting six people, most of them innocent bystanders.

One of the bullets struck 35-year-old Mexican immigrant Obed Beltrán-Sánchez in the chest, prosecutors say. Beltrán-Sánchez died at St. Barnabas Hospital. Police have not said which suspect fired the fatal bullet.

Five other people between 14 and 71 years old were wounded.

Beltrán-Sánchez was seated on the train and stepped out the door when he heard a commotion and was hit by a stray bullet, Kenny said Thursday.

“He’s just a gentleman riding the train,” Kenny said. “He made the mistake of looking out onto the platform to see what was going on and he ends up getting killed.”

It was not immediately clear Friday if the 14-year-old is being charged as an adult or a juvenile.

The arrest was announced the day a 36-year-old man was shot in the head on a Brooklyn A train during a bloody brawl with a younger man.

In that incident, the victim was the aggressor and pulled the gun, but his intended victim managed to get it away from him and shoot him in the head with it, cops said.

That shooting in the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station in downtown Brooklyn is the ninth reported on the subway system this year, cops said. This time last year, only one shooting had occurred.
