Mets-Tigers rained out, rescheduled for Thursday

- BY PETER SBLENDORIO

The Mets’ first win of 2024 will have to wait at least another day.

Tuesday night’s game against the Detroit Tigers was postponed due to an unrelenting downpour of rain at Citi Field. The game is now scheduled to be made up at 1:10 p.m. Thursday.

The Mets and Tigers had incentive to try to get the game in, with similarly dreary weather in Wednesday’s forecast. Wednesday’s game is still scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

Thursday was a common off day for the teams.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said there appeared to be a window between 7-9 p.m. to play Tuesday, but the rain remained steady throughout that stretch, and the game was officially called shortly after 9 p.m.

A spattering of fans entered the ballpark once gates opened.

In addition to being able to use Tuesday’s tickets for Thursday’s game, fans who entered Citi Field on Tuesday will also receive vouchers for another Monday-Thursday game this season, not including Yankees or Dodgers series.

The Mets lost the first game of their three-game series against Detroit on Monday, dropping them to 0-4 in their worst start to a season since 2005.

Starting pitcher Adrian Houser, whom the Mets acquired in an offseason trade with the Brewers, had been scheduled to make his team debut Tuesday against the Tigers’ Casey Mize.

The Tigers do not have another trip to Citi Field scheduled this season. They’re set to play at Yankee Stadium from May 3-5 but do not share a common off day with the Mets around then.

Tuesday marks the Mets’ second rainout of the season. Opening Day was also pushed back from last Thursday to Friday.
