Jets sign S Davis to new deal

- BY ANTWAN STALEY

Weeks after the free agency period began, there was uncertainty on whether the Jets would re-sign safety Ashtyn Davis.

But Davis and Gang Green have finally reached a deal.

Davis will re-sign with the Jets, according to sources. The terms of the contract have not been released.

After Jordan Whitehead signed with the Buccaneers last month, the Jets needed to add safety depth. Gang Green did re-sign Chuck Clark to a one-year, $2 million contract. But getting Davis back to go alongside a young Tony Adams is huge for the Jets defense, which finished third in the league in yards allowed (292.3).

Although he was a rotational player with Whitehead and Adams entrenched as the starters, Davis had a career year for the Jets last season. He finished with 37 tackles, three interceptions, and three forced recoveries.

In the Week 6 victory against the Eagles without both cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, Davis played a season-high 28 snaps and began gaining traction from there.

Davis also contributed to the Jets’ special teams with 12 tackles last season, which was the second most in the league. With special teams ace and former Pro Bowler Justin Hardee signing with the Browns this offseason, the Jets could feature Davis more in that role in 2024.

In 21 career games, Davis has six interceptions, three forced fumbles, and four fumble recoveries.

When the Jets selected him in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of California, many considered Davis’ career a disappointment. But he has continued to improve during his four seasons in the league.

Davis will return to a Jets defense that, on paper, has improved this offseason. After losing Bryce Huff in free agency, the Jets traded for former Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick and added defensive tackles Javon Kinlaw and Leki Fotu.
