MLB: Rollins sets Phillies’ hit mark in win

In Philadelph­ia, Jimmy Rollins passed Mike Schmidt as the Phillies’ hits leader with 2,235 when he singled leading off the fifth inning in a 74 win against the Cubs.

Schmidt, a Phillies TV analyst for Sunday games, retrieved Rollins’ bat after the milestone single to right off righthande­r Edwin Jackson. He greeted Rollins with a highfive and hug at first base. The entire Phillies team then came out from the dugout to offer congratula­tory hugs and handshakes.

l Danny Duffy matched a career high with nine strikeouts, and the Royals extended their winning streak to six with a 91 victory over the White Sox in Chicago.

Duffy (45) scattered five hits over sevenplus shutout innings for Kansas City.

Mike Moustakas homered among his three hits as the Royals won their second straight in this weekend series.

The Royals scored five times in the fourth — four with none out — to chase Chicago starter Hector Noesi (25).

Noesi allowed five runs — two earned — and eight hits while walking one and striking out four.

l Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright will skip a turn in the rotation to allow tendinitis in the back of his pitching elbow to subside.

General manager John Mozeliak said it hasn’t been determined who will take Wainwright’s spot on Monday night against the Mets.

The team expects the righthande­r, 93 with a 2.15 ERA, to return next Saturday against the Phillies.

NHL: Canadiens sign Therrien to extension

The Canadiens signed head coach Michel Therrien to a fouryear contract extension, two weeks after they were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Therrien, who has coached the Canadiens for the past two seasons, has one year remaining on his contract before the extension starts.

The Canadiens also traded forward Louis Leblanc to the Ducks for a conditiona­l fifthround selection in the 2015 draft.

AUTO: Menard wins Nationwide race at Michigan

Paul Menard won the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Michigan Internatio­nal Speedway when leader Joey Logano was victimized by a flat tire with about five laps remaining.

Menard ended up holding off Sam Hornish Jr. by a halfsecond for his first series victory since 2006. It was his first Nationwide start of the season.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished third, followed by pole-winner Kyle Busch and Brian Scott. l Brittany Force raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel in the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway in Tennessee.

Force claimed her second No. 1 qualifier in the last three events with her Friday run of 3.828 seconds at 317.94 mph in the 10,000horsepo­wer dragster.

NCAA: UC Irvine wins College World Series opener

In Omaha, Neb, Taylor Sparks hit his nationlead­ing ninth triple of the season to fuel UC Irvine’s threerun eighth inning in the Anteaters’ 31 victory over Texas in the opening game of the College World Series.

The Anteaters had been shut out for seven innings before they broke through against Texas starter Nathan

Thornhill (83) and reliever John Curtiss.
