Metast-ISIS

-

The ISIS menace continues to grow — with Egypt the latest to face the prospect of allout war against the jihadis after a series of attacks Wednesday in the northern Sinai.

Meanwhile, lawenforcement agencies from New York to Los Angeles — worried about terror strikes by ISIS supporters or other jihadis — are stepping up security in advance of the July 4 holiday.

A Homeland Security official said there’s “no specific, credible intelligence” of threats to US celebrations. But ISIS has issued multiple calls for its followers to strike now — particularly during Ramadan, which runs until July 17.

Those calls may have spurred recent carnage in Tunisia, France and Kuwait. And now Egypt: In the Sinai, ISISlinked jihadis struck checkpoints and a town, Sheik Zuweid, which they’re reportedly taking over.

The death toll is as high as 70. And it comes just two days after a bombing in Cairo killed Egypt’s top public prosecutor, the highest official to die at the hands of militants since the new, antiIslamist government took over two years ago.

Ever since that transition, Egypt has been battling jihadis in the Sinai, where an ISIS-linked group calling itself the Sinai Province has now taken control of several areas.

In nearby Gaza, Islamists sympathetic to ISIS have attacked Hamas, claiming the terrorists that run the strip aren’t pious (bloodthirsty) enough. Just deserts? Maybe, but the goal is to embroil Israel.

Here’s the global tally: Groups linked to, or inspired by, what President Obama once called a JV team have now spilled blood in some 14 countries and have been caught in plots in several others.

Nearly 10 months after Obama vowed to “degrade and destroy” ISIS, and 6¹/₂ years into his presidency, does anyone feel safer?
