MLB: Tigers DFA ex-Yankee Chamberlain

-

The Tigers designated veteran relievers Joba Cham

berlain and Tom Gorzelanny for assignment and activated catcher Alex Avila off the disabled list. Chamberlain, the former Yankee, struggled all season as

Joakim Soria’s setup man. In his last seven games, including six Tigers losses, he had a 14.40 ERA and allowed opponents to post a .444 batting average with four homers in five innings.

In Detroit, Anibal Sanchez’s nohit bid was broken up when former Detroit teammate Ezequiel Carrera lined a single to left with one out in the eighth inning, and the Tigers held on to beat the Blue Jays 86 on a night when Miguel Cabrera limped off with a calf injury.

Cabrera was on first base with no outs in the fourth inning and a 32 count to Victor Martinez, and took off with the pitch. Martinez fouled the ball off, but Cabrera pulled up sharply, grabbing his left leg. He was attended to by trainers and limped off the field. Cabrera had an MRI, which showed no injury to his Achilles’ tendon. He will be examined again Saturday.

In Washington, Clint Robinson, a 30yearold nonroster invitee by the Nationals in spring training who had just 13 major league atbats before this season, hit a tworun homer in the seventh inning to give Washington a 21 victory over the Giants.

In Chicago, John Danks pitched seven scoreless innings and Jose Abreu hit a home run, leading the White Sox past the Orioles 10.

In Atlanta, Juan Uribe hit a tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning, Julio Teheran delivered another strong home start and the Braves beat the Phillies 21.
