Beltran: Foot ‘sore,’ but ‘OK’

- By GEORGE A. KING III

CHICAGO — After being forced to sit out Saturday night’s game due to a sore left foot after taking a foul ball off it Friday evening, Carlos Beltran returned to the Yankees’ lineup Sunday but didn’t stay long in the 123 victory over the White Sox.

Beltran scored from second on Didi Gregorius’ single in the fourth, lined out in the fifth and was replaced in right field by Chris Young.

Spotted in the dugout, Beltran noticeably limped when he moved down the steps.

“It’s sore but I am OK, nothing to worry about,’’ said Beltran, who had a compression wrap on the foot. “Get off my feet helps and [Monday] is a day off. [Monday] rest and get ready for Tuesday.’’

Mark Teixeira preached in spring training that if healthy he could return to hitting 30 homers and driving in 100 runs. On Sunday, his leadoff homer in the fifth was his 29th of the season.

“I’ll take it,’’ said Teixeira, who has reached base in 20 straight games. “I am swinging the bat well the last two weeks and I am trying to keep it up.’’

According to manager Joe Girardi, CC Sabathia is on track to start Thursday against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. It will be Sabathia’s first start since being hospitalized for dehydration last Thursday night in Texas.

“Right now everything is planned for him to go Thursday,’’ Girardi said. “To me, he looked a lot better [Saturday]. He was pretty tired Friday.’’

The Yankees put righthanded reliever Diego Moreno on the disabled list on Sunday with elbow inflammation. After working three innings in Saturday night’s 82 loss to the White Sox, Moreno didn’t say anything following the game.

“He said in the middle of the night it started aching, it was sore today so we decided to DL him right away,’’ said Girardi, who explained the discomfort was in the back of the elbow.

Moreno gave up four runs and four hits Saturday after providing 5 ¹/₃ innings of nohit, scoreless relief against the Rangers Tuesday night.

Nick Rumbelow was elevated from TripleA Scranton/WilkesBarre to take Moreno’s roster spot.

Chase Headley went 2for3 and is on an 11game hitting streak in which he is hitting .439 (18for41).
