Marshall manages to ‘Fix’ weight

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

The Browns will see a slimmer version of Brandon Marshall on the field on Sunday.

The wide receiver is 230 pounds, the lowest he has been since 2010, he said. Marshall went on the 21Day Fix Diet before training camp, which stressed portion control, to go from 243 this spring. He said the last few years he has played at 236 pounds.

“I wanted to get down to like my rookie weight,” Marshall said. “I heard Michael Strahan say in his Hall of Fame speech when you get older you need to lose a little pounds. I think they say every pound equals five pounds of pressure on your joints. It’s great for recovery. I think that’s the key, fighting inflammation in your body. When you can do that, recovery is night and day.”

Marshall said he was on vacation in St. Bart’s after OTAs when he and his wife saw an infomercial for the diet. They both tried it. Marshall said his wife has lost 20 pounds. Marshall said he needed it after eating a lot of pizza this spring while living with Geno Smith.

“You can control what you’re putting in your body whether that’s the wrong foods, fried foods, how much food you’re putting in, when you’re putting it in, those things you can control,” Marshall said. “That’s the name of the game. The more you’re aware of that and the better you take care of your body you give yourself and your team in a better chance to win.”

Firstround pick Leonard Williams is switching his jersey number to 92 after playing with 62 in the preseason. There had been no 90s open until now when the Jets put Kevin Vickerson ( 92) on injured reserve and cut Jason Babin (93) and Ronald Talley (95). Williams said he chose 92 because of former defensive end Shaun Ellis, who was known as “The Big Cat,” just as Williams is.

Williams, who has recovered from a knee injury, will start Sunday against the Browns with Sheldon Richardson serving his fourgame suspension. Defensive line coach Pepper Johnson said Williams has worked hard, but he still has his concerns.

“Of course, he’s a rookie. He’s a puppy, so you’re going to have major concerns,” Johnson said. “The good thing is he went to USC. It’s not like it’s going to be bright lights for him.”

The Jets were healthy at practice Monday and coach Todd Bowles said he expects WR Jeremy Kerley, OLB Calvin Pace, OLB Lorenzo Mauldin and LB Erin Henderson to play Sunday.
