WASHINGTON — He may be a brain surgeon, but Dr. Ben Carson can’t cut it in the White House, according to Donald Trump.
Dealmaking and driving down the national debt just aren’t in Carson’s “natural ability,” Trump said Sunday on “Face the Nation.”
“I’ll make great deals for this country. Ben can’t do that. Ben’s a doctor and he’s not a dealmaker,” the billionaire developer said.
“Ben Carson’s a very, very nice man, but this will not be a good situation because of the fact that he’s not a dealer, he’s not a negotiator, and the president has to be,” he added.
New CBS/YouGov polling found Carson gaining on Trump in Iowa. He’s within 4 points of the billionaire: 29 percent to 25 percent.
The former pediatric neurosurgeon brushed off the criticism, but avoided any direct shots at Trump.
“It’s ridiculous to think that the only thing I can do is neurosurgery,” Carson said on CBS.
Meanwhile, former New York Gov. George Pataki says he won’t support Trump if he’s the nominee.
“Let me be very plain, I’m not going to vote for @RealDonaldTrump,” Pataki tweeted Sunday. “He’s unfit to be president.”
Trump wasted little time hitting back at Pataki.
“Why is someone like George Pataki, who did a terrible job as Governor of N.Y. and registers ZERO in the polls, allowed on the debate stage?” the former realitystar tweeted.
Trump is one of 11 GOP candidates who will take the main stage Wednesday for the second debate, whereas Pataki is one of four lowpolling candidates who will participate in an earlier forum.
Since the first debate last month, Trump has sought to offer more serious policy proposals, including outlining his immigration proposals and previewing plans to tax hedgefunders while lowering taxes on middleclass workers.
Trump described disparities between CEO and worker pay as “disgraceful.”
“You see these guys making these enormous amounts of money, it’s a total and complete joke,” he said.
