Amazin’s re-evaluate plan for ace

- By MIKE PUMA

ATLANTA — The Mets are reevaluating their options for Matt Harvey’s usage over the final three weeks of the regular season.

On Sunday, manager Terry Collins indicated the righthander could be used with more frequency in shortened outings instead of making just two normal starts.

“Every 12 days is not a good scenario,” Collins said, referring to an initial plan that would have had Harvey face the Yankees next weekend and then the Nationals in the final series of the regular season. “We’ve got to make sure this guy is ready to pitch. If we get in the postseason we have got to have Matt Harvey ready to pitch and I don’t need him to have 15 days off, so we’ve got to come up with a plan that is going to get him out there a little bit more.”

In the shortened starts, Harvey would have a reliever such as Sean Gilmartin, Erik Goeddel or Tim Stauffer as his designated replacement in the middle innings.

“We’ve talked to Matt enough times and he’s on board with what we’re thinking about doing,” Collins said before the Mets beat the Braves 107 in 10 innings.

Harvey, in his first full season removed from Tommy John surgery, has logged 171 ²/₃ innings. His agent, Scott Boras, has expressed concern about the pitcher surpassing 180 innings, including the postseason. But general manager Sandy Alderson doesn’t view 180 — even for the regular season — as a cutoff, according to a club source.

Harvey has stated his intention to pitch in the playoffs, and the Mets expect that to become a reality, but according to sources are still discussing a postseason plan for him.

Logan Verrett will take Harvey’s spot in the rotation on Monday against the Marlins.

In Harvey’s last start, against the Nationals on Tuesday, he matched a career high by allowing seven earned runs over 5 ¹/₃ innings.
