RIP IT GOOD, BOZO!
Devo rocker shrugs off 9/11 wedding ‘joke’
Devo cofounder Jerry Casale tied the knot Friday and afterward celebrated with a tasteless 9/11themed reception, complete with a Twin Towers wedding cake — featuring the bride’s and groom’s faces atop each cake tower — and boxcutter place settings, according to a report Monday.
The nutty California nuptials of Casale, singer and bassist for the countercultural New Wave band, and Krista Napp were held on the 14th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Each of the party’s tables at Michael’s Restaurant in Santa Monica had seating cards with “Gerald & Krista” printed inside an image of a boxcutter, TMZ reported.
Actual boxcutters, meanwhile, were passed out as party favors, according to the site.
Boxcutters have been linked to the 9/11 attacks because conservative commentator Barbara Olson — a passenger aboard American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon — called her husband, reporting that terrorists were armed with that household tool.
Confronted about his wedding’s offensive theme, a redfaced Casale, 67, said that he didn’t plan on getting hitched on Sept. 11, and that the date was pure “chance,” a result of the calendar and bureaucratic dictates.
“I got married on 9/11 by chance because it was the last Friday I could get married before my marriagelicense application expired,” Casale explained.
“So I got married at the Beverly Hills courthouse.”
During the dinner at Michael’s with 20 friends, one of them surprised the couple with the horrific 9/11 cake and place settings, Casale said.
“One of the friends surprised me with the cake and the place settings, and it’s because they thought it was really macabre I was getting married on 9/11,” the “Whip It” rocker said.
Even though Casale blamed the stunt on his pal, he and everyone else ran with the tasteless theme.
“I said, ‘No it’s just arbitrary [getting married on Sept. 11] and Krista and I are the Twin Towers of Love’ — you know, making a joke about love conquering all,” Casale explained.
Guests of the happy couple said they weren’t put off by the 9/11 decorations, according to TMZ.
And Casale pointed out, “Everybody ate the cake.”
