Yankees assistant GM talking with Angels

- By GEORGE A. KING III

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. — Angels owner Arte Moreno and club president John Carpino were scheduled to meet with Yankees VP and assistant GM Billy Eppler Monday night in New York.

The Angels are looking for Jerry DiPoto’s replacement and Eppler interviewed with them when the job went to DiPoto.

Eppler, a San Diego native, is also on the Mariners’ list to be interviewed for the vacancy created when Jack Zduriencik was fired.

This is Eppler’s fourth season as GM Brian Cashman’s assistant and his fifth as a VP. Eppler is in the 11th season with the Yankees and heavily involved in the professional scouting aspect of the operation.

Alex Rodriguez’s RBI double in the ninth inning tied the score, 11, and was his 3,060th career hit. That tied him with Craig Biggio for 21st place on the alltime hit list.

Since he wasn’t needed in Monday night’s 41 win, Adam Warren will start Tuesday night against the Rays.

Warren has appeared in 39 games and started 14. His most recent start was June 25 against the Astros.

Joe Girardi said 60 pitches wouldn’t be unreasonable to get from Warren, who is 66 with a 3.29 ERA and threw 47 pitches in his last outing Wednesday.

“I think if you allow it to become a problem it becomes a problem,’’ Gi rardi said of a starter taking the mound knowing a pitch limit exists. “I think Adam understands what we are doing.’’

Beyond Wednesday, when Luis Severino is slated to start against the Rays, Girardi was vague.

“We haven’t decided exactly what we are going to do,’’ said Girardi, who has Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova and Masahiro Tanaka to work into the plan.

Asked if he would set up the rotation so that Tanaka, who beat the Blue Jays, 50, Sunday, would be available to face the Blue Jays next week in Toronto, Girardi wouldn’t commit.

“With all these guys you have to measure what it does to them physically as well,’’ Girardi said.

If Girardi uses Tanaka on four days’ rest, which he was working on Sunday when he was terrific, he would open the Mets series at Citi Field Friday. If he does that, Tanaka could face the Blue Jays Wednesday at Rogers Centre. If he pitches against the Mets Saturday, Tanaka wouldn’t be available to face the Jays.
