LEO’S LOSSES

- — Johnny Oleksinski

AT Sunday night’s Academy Awards, Leonardo DiCaprio is widely expected to take home a trophy that will turn more heads than any of his model girlfriends — the Best Actor Oscar.

His bearded turn in “The Revenant” is the star’s fifth acting nomination, but he’s never nabbed an Oscar. Here’s a look at the four performances that left him empty-handed.

“What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?”

DiCaprio was nominated for playing Johnny Depp’s younger brother in this 1993 film about a rural family with an obese mom. He lost to Tommy Lee Jones in “The Fugitive.”

“The Aviator”

DiCaprio scored his second nod for playing reclusive businessman Howard Hughes. The 2004 movie had “Oscar” written all over it: a film about a fascinating character directed by Martin Scorsese. Still, he lost to Jamie Foxx in “Ray.”

“Blood Diamond”

Next came this 2006 thriller set in Sierra Leone. DiCaprio played a Rhodesian smuggler, but this intense acting stretch couldn’t snag the statuette from Forest Whitaker for his turn in “The Last King of Scotland.”

“The Wolf of Wall Street”

Reunited with Scorsese, DiCaprio took on the role of an aggressive stockbroker in this 2013 dark comedy. He lost to Matthew McConaughey for “Dallas Buyers Club.”
