Bloomberg aide hunts for Blasio challenger
Mike Bloomberg’s former campaign manager is so hellbent on dumping Mayor de Blasio that he launched a site Monday to recruit a challenger.
“It’s an embarrassment that we have a mayor under massive federal investigation,” said Bradley Tusk, who helped orchestrate former Mayor Bloomberg’s 2009 third-term victory.
“I’m going to put together an effort to find the best possible opponent. I’ll do whatever I can to help them,” he said.
Patrick Muncie, a Tusk aide, said Bloomberg is not involved in the effort.
De Blasio is facing several investigations by state and federal authorities, including probes into his fund-raising, the NYPD and a shady Lower East Side land deal.
Tusk launched NYCDeservesBetter.com on Monday and is conducting a poll of Democratic voters to gauge who the best possible challenger might be.
The results of the poll will be released Wednesday.
“For his sake, he better be doing significantly better with those voters than he is with the general population,” Tusk said, referring to the mayor’s falling poll numbers.
Tusk said he is focused on finding a Democratic challenger, but is open to candidates of all political stripes. He even speculated that the challenger might not have to face a primary, pointing out that a special election would take place if Hizzoner is indicted.
De Blasio campaign spokesman Dan Levitan brushed off the move.
“Mayor de Blasio expanded pre-K for every 4-year-old and raised wages for tens of thousands of workers,” he said. “Those are the results he will be judged on, and that is what his re-election campaign will be about.”
