Curry passes on Olympics

Enjoy the Steph Curry Show the rest of these NBA Finals, because this is the last of him in action until next season rolls around.

The Warriors superstar and back-to-back NBA MVP announced Monday he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil hours after it was reported by the Bay Area News Group.

Curry will bypass the Olympics because he wants to let his injured right knee heal. Curry mentioned “several factors” but did not specifically cite the threat of the Zika Virus, which Bulls center Pau Gasol has mentioned as a reason he may not to play for his native Spain.

Curry and the Warriors lead the Cavaliers 2-0 in the NBA Finals.

“My previous experiences with USA Basketball have been incredibly rewarding, educational and enjoyable, which made this an extremely difficult decision for me and my family,” Curry said in a statement. “However, due to several factors — including recent ankle and knee injuries — I believe this is the best decision for me at this stage of my career. It’s an incredible honor to represent your country and wear ‘USA’ on your chest, but my primary basketball-related objective this summer needs to focus on my body and getting ready for the 2016-17 NBA season.”

Curry sprained his right MCL in Game 4 of the Warriors’ opening-round series against the Rockets and returned for Game 4 of the next round against the Trail Blazers. He has remained in the lineup ever since, though he looked out of sorts at times during the conference finals against the Thunder. He reportedly told Team USA officials before returning from the knee injury he wouldn’t take part in the Olympics. He won a gold medal with Team USA in the 2010 and 2014 FIBA World Cups, but has yet to participate in the Olympics. Curry will be 32 when the 2020 Olympics arrive.
