10 people on my list to be veep

- Daniel Halper

DONALD Trump says he can’t reveal his vice-presidential pick because he still hasn’t made up his mind. Asked if he’s ready to disclose his running-mate, he said, “Honestly, I don’t think I could — I don’t know it.” Trump has until the Republican convention that runs July 18 to 21 to decide, although there’s a good chance he’ll announce his choice before he’s officially anointed the party’s presidential nominee. “I have a lot of choices. Everybody wants it,” Trump said. The most important factor is chemistry, he added, although he also reflected that the VP would have to be ready to assume the presidency. “Always, you have to say, ‘Will that person be a good president?’ ” Trump said. “But for me, the most important thing is chemistry.” Trump pointed to a surprising example as a model — the sitting president and vice president.

“I think Barack Obama has good chemistry with Joe Biden. There’s an example,” he said. “I’m not a fan of Barack Obama, but he picked a person he has chemistry with and that’s a good thing.”

The field of contenders remains broad. “I would say that I’m really seriously looking at 10 people,” Trump said. “Of the 10 people, three of them called and said they would like to be considered. Toplevel people.”

Trump initially named Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin (inset); Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama; Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich; Gov. Mike Pence of Indiana; Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee.

But Ernst and Corker took themselves out of the running Wednesday, saying they would focus on their work in the Senate.

Trump also said there are five or six others “who want it really badly,” and singled out Walker for praise. “I have a very good relationship with him,” he said.

One thing Trump is not considering as he weighs the biggest decision of his campaign: If a running mate might help him carry a specific state or constituency.

“History will tell you that it never works that way,” he said.
